Before you begin
Set the brake, disengage the PTO, remove the key before service, and never defeat a safety interlock.

Classify the sound: silent, one click, repeated clicks, or a starter that turns slowly.
Confirm start conditions
- Sit in the operating position and set brake, PTO, and drive controls exactly as the manual requires.
- Inspect control position and accessible interlock connectors; never jumper an interlock as a repair.
- Check the specified fuse and investigate why it opened before replacement.

Battery and high-current path
- Inspect terminals and cables for looseness, corrosion, heat damage, or broken strands.
- Open-circuit voltage alone does not prove cranking capacity; use an appropriate load or conductance test.
- Use voltage-drop testing during cranking, if trained, to locate resistance instead of replacing cables by appearance.
Control or starter fault
- With the wiring diagram, determine whether the solenoid receives its command under valid start conditions.
- If command and cable paths pass, continue with the specified solenoid and starter tests.
- Confirm the engine and driven components rotate normally before condemning the starter.
Stop and reassess when
- The battery is swollen, cracked, hot, or leaking.
- Cables smoke or become hot.
- Testing would require bypassing a safety control.
