Before you begin
Test outdoors with guards installed and stay clear of the deck and exhaust.
Start here
Record whether it runs for seconds, until warm, or only until a cutting load is applied. Timing determines the next checks.
Dies after a few seconds
- Confirm steady fuel supply, correct choke movement, and that the stop-control wiring is not loose or pinched.
- Do not treat tapping the carburetor or holding the choke partly closed as a finished repair.

Dies after warming up
- Investigate tank venting by the manufacturer procedure; never operate permanently with a loose cap.
- Repeat an approved spark test while the failure is present if the engine restarts only after cooling.
- Look for water or debris that can move through the fuel bowl and interrupt flow.

Dies under load
- Check for packed grass, damaged driven parts, or a cutting height too low for conditions.
- Inspect the air filter and fuel supply before changing carburetor or governor settings.
- Use service data for compression, valve, and governor diagnosis if basic checks pass.
Stop and reassess when
- The engine overspeeds.
- Fuel leaks or damaged wiring is present.
- A rotating component is loose or striking another part.
