Before you begin
Run only outdoors and keep guards installed during operational checks.
Start here
Determine whether it runs poorly with no load, only while cutting, only cold, or only after warming up.
Establish the conditions
- Replace unknown or contaminated fuel before interpreting adjustment results.
- Improvement with partial choke can support a lean-condition investigation, but does not identify the failed part.
- Note whether the complaint changes with temperature, speed, or load.

Inspect before adjusting
- Check the air filter for restriction, damage, bad fit, or fuel/oil saturation.
- Verify the spark-plug type and gap from engine data; inspect for fouling and damage.
- Clear external cooling debris and investigate overheating or exhaust restriction before continued use.

Follow the fuel path
- Confirm tank venting, valve position, line condition, and continuous supply to the carburetor.
- Clean or adjust only with the procedure for that carburetor and its emissions limits.
- Verify the result from idle through governed speed and under a normal load.
Stop and reassess when
- The engine exceeds normal governed speed.
- It knocks, overheats, or produces persistent abnormal smoke.
